Senator Tony Strickland (R-Huntington Beach) released a statement in response to Governor Newsom’s redistricting press conference this afternoon:
“California is not Texas, and we have established the gold standard for a Citizens Redistricting Commission that should serve as a national model. This commission is non-partisan, operates with full transparency, and encourages public participation.
“I am deeply concerned that the governor and his Democratic allies may push through redistricting plans lacking the transparency and public input our democratic process demands. Organizations like Common Cause and the League of Women Voters have vigorously opposed Governor Newsom’s proposed redistricting initiatives.
“I strongly urge the governor, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, and California Democratic leaders to back U.S. Representative Kevin Kiley’s pro-democracy bill to abolish mid-decade redistricting nationwide. Together, we can safeguard our democracy and ensure that redistricting is a fair and transparent process for all."
