Senator Strickland champions national expansion of Citizen-led Redistricting

Senator Tony Strickland (R-Huntington Beach) has introduced Senate Joint Resolution 10, which aims to expand California’s citizen-led redistricting commission to all 50 states. SJR 10 seeks to safeguard the democratic process, strengthens transparency and accountability in how legislative districts are drawn, and restores public confidence for fair, voter-driven redistricting.

"Fair districts lead to fair representation. By expanding California’s model nationwide and adopting it for all 50 states, citizens are empowered to choose their representatives – not the other way around. I believe that states without nonpartisan, independent redistricting commissions are vulnerable to extreme gerrymandering, resulting in congressional and legislative districts that do not reflect the true political will of the voters. Independent redistricting is the only way to keep maps fair and voters’ voices strong.”

In 2008, voters enacted a constitutional amendment establishing an independent Citizens Redistricting Commission, which removes politics from the redistricting process, prioritizes the needs of the people, and prevents insider politics.

A Politico article disclosed that voters prefer keeping the citizen-led redistricting commission by nearly a 2-to-1 margin, with 64% of registered voters preferring to keep it. Click HERE to review the Politico-Citrin Center Possibility Lab poll results.
