Senator Strickland responds to LAO Forecast: “California Has a Wasteful Spending Problem”

Senator Tony Strickland (R–Huntington Beach) issued the following statement in response to the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office releasing California’s latest revenue forecast:

“California doesn’t have a revenue problem. The governor stated in January at his State of the State address that capital gains and the boom in the AI industry have increased our revenues.

"Despite today’s positive news, California will continue to have a structural budget deficit because this governor has driven spending up by 77 percent since he took office, while revenues rose by only 62 percent, creating a broken budget. Clearly, California has a wasteful spending problem.”

On April 28, the LAO released a report stating that General Fund spending has grown by more than $100 billion, from $146 billion in 2019–20 to $248 billion under Governor Newsom’s proposed 2026–27 budget.
