GameChanger Charity

Jim and his son, Taylor Then & Now
Their Story
GameChanger was founded in 2007 by Jim Carol and his son Taylor, during Taylor’s five-year battle with pediatric cancer. For Taylor, gaming was more than entertainment—it was a lifeline. It gave him moments of joy, connection with friends, and the ability to be himself in the middle of treatment.
Overview
GameChanger Charity (GCC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Dana Point, California, dedicated to transforming the hospital experience for children facing life-threatening illnesses. Founded in 2007 by Jim Carol and his son Taylor during Taylor’s five-year battle with pediatric cancer, the organization is powered entirely by volunteers. What began as a mission to provide Taylor with moments of joy and connection through gaming has grown into a global movement delivering holistic pediatric support, including game rooms, equine therapy, scholarships, and stress reduction research—across more than 250 hospitals on five continents.
Mission
GameChanger Charity is a Conspiracy for Good. The organization’s mission is to bring holistic support to children confronting serious illness, focusing on emotional well-being, play, creativity, and human connection alongside clinical care. Guided by principles of Kids First, Radical Transparency, Tech for Good, and the fusion of Humanity + Innovation, GCC ensures that nearly all contributions (96% of every dollar) go directly to programs that make a tangible impact. The organization leverages technology, partnerships, and community advocacy to create joyful, meaningful experiences for hospitalized children and their families worldwide.
Innovative Programs and Impact
- Gaming and Virtual Reality Solutions: GCC has established the world’s most advanced pediatric gaming network, with more than 350 consoles across Intermountain Healthcare and partner hospitals. These systems provide distraction therapy, reduce anxiety, and foster social connection.
- Wearable Anxiety-Reduction Technology: In partnership with the Yale XR Research Lab, GCC is funding research that pioneers new tech for reducing stress and anxiety, including the development of wearable devices and VR tools that help prevent panic before it becomes debilitating.
- Teen Rooms and Specialized Spaces: GCC designs spaces that meet the unique needs of teens and hard-to-reach patients, promoting independence, dignity, and engagement during treatment.
- Global Hospital Partnerships: Programs span over 250 hospitals worldwide, including Yale Children’s Hospital, Primary Children’s Hospital in Utah, Kapiolani Medical Center in Hawai‘i, and locations in South Africa and Cairo.
- 3D Printing and Creative Therapies: Bedside 3D printing projects and therapeutic activities help children understand medical procedures, lowering fear and stress while empowering patients through creativity.
- Mental Health Focus Recognizing the growing pediatric mental health crisis, GCC provides caregivers with tools, resources, and hope for children isolated in hospitals. With long waitlists and cut funding for many services, GCC’s technology and support systems equip hospital staff to deliver care that addresses emotional well-being alongside clinical treatment.
- Volunteer-Driven Model The organization operates with over 250 volunteers, maximizing every donation to directly benefit children. GCC maintains a zero-overhead model, ensuring that 96% of contributions go straight to programs and services.
Getting Involved
GCC encourages the community to actively participate in its mission. Opportunities include:

- Fundraise: Host events or campaigns to raise awareness and funding.
- Donate: Contributions go directly to programs that benefit hospitalized children.

Community Engagement
GCC has a strong local presence in Dana Point, with the Carol family and the organization supporting the community for over 40 years. The charity continues to amplify its impact through coordinated media campaigns, hospital newsletters, and strategic partnerships to create a global narrative of pediatric health innovation.
Key Messages
Healing is more than medicine—joy, play, and creativity are essential for emotional recovery. Children come first; spaces and programs are intentionally designed around their needs. Partnerships, not charity: GCC works alongside hospitals, listening to staff and families to create sustainable impact. Families benefit as much as children: moments of joy provide relief and hope to parents navigating serious illness. Every intervention is an investment in childhood dignity and emotional well-being.
